CARNIVAL IN MALTA - 4th to 8th March 2011
Carnival in Malta is synonymous with 5 days of complete madness, bright colours, competitions, events and fun.
Carnival is celebrated right before the start of Lent. It starts off on a Friday and goes on till Tuesday, before Ash Wednesday.
Children have a couple of days off from school and most families head for Valletta which bursts with parades, music, floats and dressed up people.

HOLY WEEK IN MALTA - Holy Week commences on the Friday preceding Good Friday, when the statue depicting our lady of sorrows from various towns and villages around Malta will be carried in a procession through the streets.  On Maundy Thursday, the great tradition in Malta of the ‘seven visits’ will take place. Worshippers will pay visits to seven different churches either in one locality or around the island in order to pay homage to the Altars of Repose.
Good Friday is a very sombre day on Malta and Gozo as churches will be mostly deprived of the traditional ornamental style. Instead the dominant colour on this day will be red, symbolising the Blood of Christ.  Things are completely transformed from the following day, when church bells around Malta toll as they break the night’s silence in order to announce the Resurrection of Christ.
During mid-morning on Easter Sunday, the statue of the risen Christ is carried around the streets close to the church. At several stages during the procession, the way is cleared and the statue-bearers run with the statue before holding it aloft triumphantly for the crowds to salute the statue of the Christ.  Easter season in 2011 will be from
17th to 24th April.
